Description

The school is a national plus kindergarten and elementary school in Yogyakarta that is expanding to add the junior and high school functions, because it systems a good curriculum. Unlike any other junior and high school in Indonesia, Olifant has the ‘moving class’ system, where the students move to each functional room for certain classes. Our main idea for the school is to enhance the learning experience from the building itself, letting the school to be the second teacher, as it is where the children spend the most of their time every day. We implement those ideas into several design strategies. Firstly, we create a flexible and adaptable design that creates spaces that can be used for learning, playing, and communal activities, while also maintaining the connection and relationship between the users: students, teachers, and parents. This results in a curated circulation system for those users to easily interact and move around the building. We also want to integrate an appropriate level of simulation of color, texture, and sound, as they play a significant role for every child. We especially apply this in the pre-school and the kindergarten area, where the building can stimulate and introduce colours in the early ages. We also did a study on the behaviour of the children that tell us that they love to touch the surrounding things. Thus, we design a combination between the hard and the soft surfaces to complement the building value from the material characteristics.
