Riverbend Bamboo House (Agung Budi Raharsa as part of Ibuku Team). The Riverbend House located in Bambu Indah Resort in Sayan Ubud. Escape the outside world in this enchanted riverside palace, under a curved copper roof surrounded by lush green, and the river at your doorstep. This house is a perfect fit for families and groups of friends, designed to sleep 4-6 people in two rooms one atop the other (both with en-suite bathrooms). Its huge glass windows offer sweeping views over the spectacular river. Riverbend also has two private natural spring plunge pools and a copper tub for moon bathing. This structure and position follow the shape of the river, but during the setting out process, and when we decided to add another room, it mysteriously got nudged downstream a little. But we think that’s appropriate for the river setting! The challenge with Riverbend was to make an unusual feeling structure that seemed more like a nest than a house. This way of using the beams to cross each other is technically a gridshell system and it’s the first time we’ve done this in a home.  We also had to make sure it could be totally enclosed and air-conditioned, in part due to the wild location. The window frames let us hind the vertical beams which hold the space up. We actually only touch down at the bank, left and right, leaving all the front open. This space really needed more than a 190-degree view, so we have a 220-degree view here. That view didn’t need to be a picture-perfect clear glass view though- it works really well to be picked up and scattered across the way. Scattering the view also means we didn’t need to do a horizontal rail which would have broken the outlook of the river. So we staggered the windows, their height, width and position to play with that. The project has done in 2018 then reached the finals of 2019 Dezeen Awards. The annual Dezeen Awards identifies the world's best architecture, interiors and design, and the studio and individuals who produce the most outstanding work. In 2019 two of the finalists are from Indonesia. The Riverbend House being selected as a finalist in Dezeen annual awards 2019, therefore, is no feat, and in 2019 Indonesia proudly has two, The Riverbend House is one of them. The awards cover 36-categories. Riverbend House is included in the Hospitality Building category. The appropriately named Riverbend House does this by following the shape of Bali's Ayung River and uses almost all bamboo to do so. The property offers 220-degrees views and has 2-bedrooms, a living room, and the kitchen with spectacular views of the Ayung River. This year's 2019 Dezeen Awards will be judged by an international panel of 75-leading architecture and design figures, looking for three key elements: beauty, innovation, and benefits (to both people and planet).
