A Sanctuary of Tropical Modernism and Layered Privacy Location: South Tangerang Type: Residential Scope: Architecture Design Site Area: 1160.25 sqm GFA / GIA: 960.67 sqm Storeys: 2 The Vision Where does open, contemporary living meet the need for essential privacy? This residential project explores the delicate balance between connecting with a lush tropical environment and providing a serene, secluded sanctuary for its inhabitants. Our goal was to create a facade that is not merely a barrier, but an active element of the architecture—one that breathes, filters light, and defines the living experience within. Design Strategy & Execution The design response hinges on a sophisticated, layered facade strategy tailored for a warm climate. We addressed the dual challenges of managing intense sunlight and mitigating overlooking issues through two primary architectural interventions: - The Timber Veil: The upper level is wrapped in an articulated dark timber screen system. This provides crucial shading, reducing solar heat gain while allowing diffused daylight and prevailing breezes to filter into the private quarters. It creates a sense of enclosure without feeling fortress-like. - Textural Grounding: At the street level, textured concrete breeze blocks form a semi-permeable boundary. This adds intricate visual interest and depth while ensuring ventilation and security for the ground-floor spaces. Materiality & Atmosphere The material palette is intentionally restrained yet rich in texture, designed to age gracefully. The raw, cool tones of smooth concrete contrast beautifully with the warmth of the timber slats and dark metal accents. Deep cantilevered roof overhangs not only protect the structure from the elements but cast dramatic shadows, giving the building a dynamic presence that changes throughout the day.
